Ciconia ciconia
The installation Ciconia ciconia (lat. White stork) draws attention to similarities between human and bird migration routes. As an act of “translation”, the clattering noises of white storks become a protest slogan that fills temporary human spaces of protest in the main hall of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar during the climate strike week and at a protest in front of the city council of Weimar for migrant’s rights.
It consists of a video of white storcks crossing Idlib in Syria during their migration. These images from a syrian news channel show that a bird that is deeply connected to central european culture also belongs to other contexts. Another video shows white storks that perform their typical clattering noises. Displayed on a smartphone and amplified with a megaphone it becomes a local manifestation of protest but at the same time comes from another space and time. The megaphone is installed on a pedestal with a drawing of stork migration routes that resemble contemporary human migration routes.
